Defrag utility
« on: September 03, 2018, 12:20:41 pm »
Please consider putting the Windows defrag utility back in - it triggers the TRIM feature in SSDs (rather than actually defragmenting them).  This seems like a useful feature worth keeping.

Again, thanks for your efforts and generosity in creating and releasing Win10Rescue  :)

Did I have it in before?  I look into this and see what I can do.

Thanks to Dr.Dimensional for building Win10Rescue.com and allowing us to join.

Please consider putting the Windows defrag utility back in...

Well, "back in" as in "like in normal Windows 10."  Win 7's defrag util doesn't trigger the trim function, but Win 8.1's does.  I ass*u*me that Win 10's defrag does too.  In any event, its presence would be helpful in Win10Rescue.

Thanks for replying, and for building Win10Rescue.  Thanks to Dr. Dimensional for hosting this site.

The windows defrag utility requires TaskScheduler and a number of other components to be present that are not present in the current PE build.  I found a SSD specific utility that enables/disables trim w/optimization.  It will be in the HDD Tools> section of the Start Menu in the next release along with the already included defrag utility...

Would that be ForceTrim.exe, by any chance?

No it is Tweak-SSD

http://www.totalidea.com/products/tweak-ssd/

Okay, got it.  I'll give it a look.  The above-mentioned ForceTrim.exe works for me; it's only 449kB and is a stand-alone executable.  It was written in 2010 but has worked safely on my Win 7 system, both on an NVMe drive and a standard SATA-III SSD.

Thanks for all your work.

I think I'm going to go with ForceTrim.exe, Tweak-SSD doesn't seem to offer much benefit in WinPE mode other than TRIM... and its much larger with the same functionality.  You having tried and tested the software knowing it works well is also one of the main factors..

Before you use ForceTrim.exe find out why OCZ that created the tool abandoned it
it is no longer supplied by OCZ for a reason

I like Tweak-SSD it work for me :)

It was an early utility (around 2010) supplied by OCZ that was pretty generic and not brand-specific, as far as I can tell.  It was eventually rolled into their all-in-one SSD utility that ran the trim function immediately, did ROM/firmware updates, and so forth, and was limited to just their brand of SSDs.  I think Toshiba has bought OCZ since then and the all-in-one SSD utility has move even further into brand specificity.

I like Tweak-SSD it work for me :)

Tweak-SSD did not improve my NVMe's performance nor my SATA-3 SSD's performance.  Its trim function required purchasing Tweak-SSD, which I decided not to do as I already had ForceTrim.exe, and it worked for me on all my SSDs under Windows 7.  Windows 8 or 8.1 and above support running trim immediately when you use the defrag function on an SSD, so neither ForceTrim nor Tweak-SSD was necessary for that use in those cases.

That's the story I pieced together from my internet searching.  I had presented this info to Bob.Omb via PM.
